The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Major (Infantry) Ernest E. Root (ASN: 0-266181), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services during the operations against the Japanese on New Georgia from 20 to 31 July 1943. As Executive Officer of an infantry battalion of the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, Major Root, on many occasions advanced beyond the front-line troops in order to secure accurate and vital information. In performing these missions he was under constant exposure to heavy sniper, machine-gun, and mortar fire. On 27 – 28 July he was assigned to command the assault echelon of the battalion on the mission to capture several strongly-fortified enemy positions. Through his thorough knowledge of military tactics, his skill in making quick and accurate decisions, and his inspiring leadership, the assault echelon successfully captures the positions and aided immeasurably in the successful continuation of the attack on the Munda Airport. Major Root displayed outstanding devotion to duty and his courage and leadership were an inspiration to the battalion. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Root and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
