The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain (Infantry) Dallas C. Wade (ASN: 0-302229), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, during the drive towards Munda Airport on New Georgia from 20 July to 5 August 1943. Frequently approaching to within 15 yards of Japanese lines, Captain Wade, as battalion S-3, made repeated reconnaissance trips across difficult terrain over trails harassed by the enemy snipers. Based on information he furnished, the orders and decisions of the battalion commander were tactically sound and resulted in the accomplishment of the battalion’s mission. When the battalion was attached to another regiment for an attack on enemy hill positions, Captain Wade succeeded in crossing an area in which sniper fire was intense to obtain maps and plans for the attack. On another occasion, he voluntarily visited a neighboring battalion which was fighting off a vicious counterattack by the Japs, and his calm assurance that his own outfit would stand fast contributed greatly to this battalion’s determination to hold its ground. His magnificent devotion to duty was inspirational and an important factor in the battalion’s success. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Captain Wade and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
