The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Major (Medical Corps) Patsie F. Briola (ASN: 0-296896), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services at New Georgia during the period of 19 July to 5 August 1943, while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. As regimental surgeon, Major Briola’s thorough training of his personnel and painstaking advance planning made possible a highly efficacious medical service throughout hostilities. Although constantly harassed by enemy fire, inclement weather and arduous terrain, this officer and his personnel administered to the medical needs of approximately 15 officers and 400 enlisted men with such alacrity and dispatch as to inspire all the fighting men with confident assurance and high morale. Performing his own duties with exemplary courage and devoted efficiency, Major Briola inspired his men to expend their best efforts and this contributed inestimably to the success of the combat operations. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Briola and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
