The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Private Nicholas Galante (ASN: 32164831), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services from 27 July to 5 August 1943, while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Munda Airfield, New Georgia. Private Galante displayed outstanding devotion to duty and conspicuous efficiency while serving as a wireman during the Munda campaign. Without regard for personal safety, he maintained constant telephone communications with higher headquarters and operated through dense undergrowth and along routes covered by enemy sniper fire. Private Galante often was exposed to enemy mortar, machine-gun and sniper fire ranging from five to one hundred yards while bringing communication lines up to the front and repairing broken lines. In spite of the hazards involved, he fulfilled his missions in a highly efficient and commendable manner. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Private Galante and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
