The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain (Infantry) Carl W. Heinmiller (ASN: 0-381754), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services in the South Pacific Area from 11 September 1942 to 29 May 29 1943, while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. To further his military knowledge Captain Heinmiller requested and was assigned duty with an organization of natives experienced in jungle craft and warfare. Under the extremely adverse conditions of the jungle, and by living the life of a native, he gained a wealth of knowledge which he later imparted to members of his command. Following this achievement Captain Heinmiller devoted his own time to the study, construction, and perfection of booby traps. As a result, selected men of his organization have become proficient in detecting, disarming, and destroying enemy booby traps. As a further immeasurably aid to combat efficiency. Captain Heinmiller devised a pack for carrying light machine guns silently through the jungle. Finally, during the period May 24 to 29, this officer volunteered to clear an area known to contain numerous uncharted anti-tank mines and booby traps. Without regard for his personal safety, and cognizant of the hazards involved in the task, he personally searched for, found, and disarmed the traps, making the area safe for occupancy. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Captain Heinmiller and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
