The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ronald R. Gerdes (ASN: 0-5350849), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Gerdes distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Platoon Leader in Company D, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized). During the afternoon, the Company was conducting a search and destroy mission when they made contact with an enemy force of unknown size, concealed in fortified positions. First Lieutenant Gerdes, with complete disregard for his own safety, continuously exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to control and direct his men. Tirelessly, First Lieutenant Gerdes led his platoon in efforts to capture the enemy’s position. When the platoon met heavy resistance, he personally killed three enemy soldiers. First Lieutenant Gerdes’ extraordinary heroism while under heavy enemy fire was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
