The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Walter J. Kalinofski, Jr. (ASN: 32914031), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 20 March 1945, at about 1030 hours, in the vicinity of Conwig, Germany, Staff Sergeant Kalinofski stepped from his position of cover directly into the line of fire of an enemy machine gun 100 yards away, to place accurate bazooka fire on this gun which was holding up the advance of his company. Coolly firing his last rocket despite the machinegun bullets which churned the air and ground about him, Staff Sergeant Kalinofski demolished the gun position, killing the entire German crew. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Kalinofski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
