The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant George S. Yandell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1944, in Germany. When an enemy counterattack, consisting of two tanks supported by infantry, penetrated to the center of an occupied town, Technical Sergeant Yandell assembled members of an anti-tank platoon and assisted greatly in the formation of a hasty defense. He exposed himself to place a bazooka team fifty feet from an enemy tank and to cover them while they knocked the tank out. Technical Sergeant Yandell then went into a house known to be occupied by the enemy and cleared it. As the enemy was forced back, he remained with the assault groups and aided in knocking out a machine gun. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Yandell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
