“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant John Rescigno (ASN: 32006280), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 December 1944, in Germany. Prior to an attack against an enemy held town, Technical Sergeant Rescigno was guiding a patrol to a position from which it could assist the attack when suddenly artillery fire was brought down upon them. Sergeant Rescigno was knocked down by the concussion of a shell which burst next to him, and in falling his leg was badly injured. Nevertheless, he insisted upon continuing the mission with the patrol and successfully completed his assignment. Following the assault on the town by his unit, Technical Sergeant Rescigno once more exhibited exceptional fortitude by helping to carry the wounded back over a distance of three miles across rough terrain to the aid station. He was still suffering sharp pain from his injury, but performed his service gallantry and without complaints. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Rescigno, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
