The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Anthony Leger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in 1945. While his company was attacking just behind the Elbe River front lines, enemy resistance was encountered which halted the attack. This resistance included an enemy tank. Although he had never fired a bazooka before, Private First Class Leger obtained one and on his own initiative crawled under fire to a strategic position. After his first shot, which missed, the enemy tank directed fire at his position. Undaunted, he continued firing so that the enemy tank with supporting infantrymen was forced to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Leger, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
