The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lynn Howard Mead, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 January 1945, in Belgium. The tanks on which they were attacking having bogged down, First Lieutenant Mead and his men were forced to dismount and proceed through deep snow and intense fire from a Mark V tank and a self-propelled gun which made it difficult to advance. Fearlessly exposing himself, First Lieutenant Mead maneuvered his platoon so successfully that he reached the objective and put the self-propelled gun out of action. Friendly fire, which he directed, knocked out the enemy tank allowing the platoon to advance. First Lieutenant Mead’s fearlessness and quick thinking sustained the company’s attack and were contributing factors in the success of the battalion operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Mead, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
