The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Roger Boles Stiles (ASN: 39857567), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1944, in Germany. During a German counteroffensive near Aachen, Staff Sergeant Stiles observed a group of enemy attempting to break through his platoon sector. He organized an eight-man patrol and succeeded in surprising them, taking 30 prisoners. Returning the prisoners to the rear, he made a reconnaissance. Although under enemy fire, he led his gun crew forward and directed their fire against the advancing enemy until forced to withdraw. He then organized a perimeter defense and, despite intense fire being directed at him, manned a machine gun. He inflicted several casualties on the enemy and steadfastly refused to surrender, but encouraged is men to carry on until he was mortally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Stiles, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
