The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Herbert Glenn Poppe (ASN: 0-1321001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 9 August 1944 to 15 August 1944, in France. During the battle of Mortain, First Lieutenant Poppe, leader of a machine gun platoon, was instrumental in hurling back a strong enemy counterattack. He distinguished himself by crawling from one to another of his platoon’s emplacements which were on the exposed forward slope of a hill, encouraging and directing his men, and exposing himself continuously to the fierce enemy fire. During this period, First Lieutenant Poppe led three patrols deep into enemy territory to obtain information. The third patrol encountered strong enemy opposition but assisted by the skill and aggressive fighting spirit of its leader, the patrol fought its way out, inflicting a number of casualties on the enemy, capturing one prisoner, and returning with valuable information. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Poppe reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
