The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Leverette Land (ASN: 0-1320241), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 November 1944, in Germany. Second Lieutenant Land distinguished himself during an attack on an enemy-held town in which his platoon was assigned as an assault element. Despite strong enemy resistance the attack progressed to a point less than 200 yards from the objective where they were finally brought to resume the advance and take the objective at all costs. Second Lieutenant Land met his death before reaching the objective, but his men, inspired by the gallantry of their leader, continued the advance and successfully completed their mission. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Second Lieutenant Land reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
