The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Irving Sirota (ASN: 1711214), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 308th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, October 2 – 7, 1918. Private Sirota was on duty with a detachment of his regiment which was cut off and surrounded by the enemy in the Forest of Argonne. During this period he was without food, but he continued to assist and give first aid to the wounded exposing himself to heavy shell and machine-gun fire at the risk of his life, until he was completely exhausted.
