The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Clarence William Shahan, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in January 1945, in Belgium. While his company was being subjected to heavy fire from enemy tanks and artillery, Staff Sergeant Shahan and a comrade crawled under intense fire to the aid of two wounded men. Together they were able to carry one man to a place of shelter and upon returning for the other man, Staff Sergeant Shahan’s comrade was wounded and he was forced to proceed alone but succeeded in removing the other wounded man from the area. His heroism and courage were responsible for saving the lives of two of his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Shahan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
