The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Gerald Emile Posner, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with an Infantry Company of the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 November 1944, in Germany. During an attack by his platoon in Germany, two casualties were suffered and, despite the heavy enemy fire, Captain Posner went to their aid but found that they had died of their wounds. After receiving orders to withdraw, Captain Posner remained until the last man had been safely withdrawn. Although the attack was halted by heavy small arms, mortar, and artillery fire, Captain Posner moved to the had of his platoon and led it on to its objective. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Posner reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
