The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James M. Shroyer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 January 1945, in Belgium. During operations in Belgium, Private First Class Shroyer advanced 150 yards along a road subjected to enemy sniper and machine gun fire to give aid to the wounded. He calmly and skillfully administered first aid and evacuated six wounded men although he himself had been wounded in the action. Later, Private First Class Shroyer, through enemy mortar fire, returned to the first aid station where he attended the wounds of nine other men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Shroyer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
