Corporal Smith and his comrades built footbridges across rivers in Germany to enable ground assault troops to advance. While performing this important and dangerous work, he was wounded by the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
