“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James I. Manning, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in 1944 and 1945. Intense enemy fire wounded a scout and forced First Lieutenant Manning’s platoon to seek cover. Although the enemy fire did not abate and mortar fire was not centered on him, First Lieutenant Manning crawled to the wounded man and gave him first aid. He then crawled through the enemy fire, dragging the man with him to the platoon position. First Lieutenant Manning’s heroism and courage in saving the mans life was an inspiration to all who observed him. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Manning reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
