The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wayne M. Chadwick (ASN: 38591253), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in 1945. When attacking elements of his battalion were halted by heavy enemy small arms, machine gun, mortar, and tank fire, Private First Class Chadwick, as radio operator, and his mortar observer, crawled under the terrific fire across open terrain to a shell crater one hundred yards ahead of the friendly troops. While they were adjusting fire upon the enemy, shells from the enemy tanks began falling close to their position. Undaunted, they remained in their precarious position for six hours, firing into the enemy positions and finally forced the tanks to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Chadwick, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
