The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Willie Brame Irby, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 November 1944, in Germany. During an attack against the enemy, supporting tanks were unable to advance because the only route of approach was heavily mined. Captain Irby voluntarily assumed charge of a group which advanced under enemy observation and in the face of fierce mortar, artillery, small arms, and direct tank fire, methodically clearing a path through the minefield so that the infantry assault troops and the supporting tanks could advance. While engaged in the job of clearing the minefield the group was attacked by an enemy ground force. Captain Irby personally killed one of the enemy and forced the others to withdraw in the face of his accurate fire. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Irby reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
