“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Fredolph A. Hendrickson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. During one of the strongest counter-attacks ever experienced by his company, the enemy’s tanks and infantry broke through and overran the front line and reserve line held by his company. Realizing the imminent danger of a complete breakthrough, Captain Hendrickson made a personal reconnaissance in the midst of intense shell fire and selected strategic positions from which to halt the enemy effectively. Although seriously wounded, due to his strategic organization and tactical skill, Captain Hendrickson’s men held their positions. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Hendrickson reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
