The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Harry Preston Simpson (ASN: 1550407), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery B, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Le Channel, France, 28 July 1918. After his commanding officer and 32 members of his battery had been wounded by a bomb from an enemy plane, Sergeant Simpson, himself wounded, assisted in the evacuation of the wounded, after which he remained until his piece was placed in a new position, before he retired for treatment.

Simpson (ASN: 1550407), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Simpson displayed extraordinary heroism in battle on 28 July 1918, near Le Charmel, France, when although wounded himself, and seeing his captain and 32 other members of the battery wounded by a bomb from an enemy airplane, he assisted in evacuating the wounded and retained command of his section until his piece was placed din a new position, before reporting for treatment.
