The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John J. Doane, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in 1944 and 1945. During an attack, Sergeant Doane and a comrade moved their injured tank commander through a hail of enemy machine gun fire to the shelter of a nearby building. Although they were pinned down on many occasions and were subjected to sniper and artillery fire, they steadfastly continued to bring their commander to the rear. Sergeant Doane’s gallantry and demonstrated fortitude helped save the live of his comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Doane, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
