“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard G. Graham, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 November 1944, in Germany. First Lieutenant Graham was given the mission of organizing a night combat patrol to make a raid within enemy lines for the purpose of capturing prisoners for interrogation purposed. First Lieutenant Graham organized the patrol from volunteers within his platoon and directed their progress across a heavily mined area until an enemy outpost was reached. Displaying great personal bravery and skillful tactics, First Lieutenant Graham and two of his men rushed the enemy outpost, capturing two prisoners without a casualty to members of his patrol, after which he successfully returned his patrol and prisoners to his own lines. The inspiring leadership and bravery exhibited by First Lieutenant Graham reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
