The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William D. Gibson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 18 November 1944. While his company was attacking the enemy, heavy opposition was encountered and heavy machine gun and small arms fire wounded one of Private First Class Gibson’s comrades. Hearing the man’s cries, he dashed out on the field and despite the danger, administered first aid and carried him to safety. As a result of his gallant action, Private First Class Gibson saved his comrade’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gibson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
