“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Harry O. Bowersox (ASN: 33557381), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Action in 1944. While he was dug in a foxhole during a battle, two soldiers approached him and asked to share his position, Realizing that they were Germans, he answered them in German and invited them in. When they entered he seized the rifle of one and killed him in the ensuing encounter, and too the other one prisoner. That enemy soldier turned out to be a German noncommissioned officer who revealed much helpful information upon questioning. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Bowersox, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
