The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James J. Hand (ASN: 0-1996659), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 April 1945, in Germany. An enemy counterattack isolated Second Lieutenant Hand’s machine gun platoon. Despite being wounded, Second Lieutenant Hand organized his platoon into a defensive position and steadfastly directed machine gun fire against the attacking enemy, inflicting heavy casualties, until he and his men were overwhelmed and taken prisoner. Second Lieutenant Hand’s outstanding leadership and courage reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
