“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Elmer H. Glenz (ASN: 36288391), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. When an attack made by a group of Infantrymen failed due to fierce enemy resistance Private First Class Glenz voluntarily went forward alone carrying a mortar tube and a bag of ammunition. When he reached a place close to the enemy strongpoint, without the aid of a bipod or base plane and in a partially exposed position, he delivered such accurate fire on the enemy that their attention was partially diverted, allowing a friendly assault group to capture the position. The courage and fighting spirit displayed by Private First Class Glenz on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
