“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick R. Bagford (ASN: 33203281), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, in 1944 and 1945. First Lieutenant Bagford left his rear position and went to an observation post in a house subjected to continual small arms fire and direct tank fire. By remaining in his hazardous position he directed fire on two enemy mortar groups, destroying the mortars and scattering their crews. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Bagford, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
