Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Louis C. Campo (ASN: 32160637), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, on 12 February 1945, in Germany. While his company was being trained in the use of rubber boats, one of the boats became snagged on the wire used as a guide and overturned, dumping the five men into the icy waters. One of the men became entangled in some telephone wire and the weight of his equipment pulled him under the water. First Sergeant Campo, also entangled in the wire, managed to free himself and then instantly dove under the water and located his comrade. Working feverishly he finally extricated the man, brought him to the surface, and succeeded in getting him to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by First Sergeant Camp reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
