The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph Pantisamo (ASN: 12133781), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. Numerous casualties were caused among Private First Class Pantisamo’s company from booby traps and anti-personnel mines when the company entered a woods during darkness. Despite these conditions and mortar fire, he made his way to the wounded men to give them first aid. While moving forward to one of the wounded men, he struck a trip wire and the resulting explosion wounded him severely. His heroic self-sacrifice was responsible for caring for several seriously wounded men, thereby saving their lives. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Pantisamo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
