    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James O. Yankie (ASN: 20921170), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. During an attack, Sergeant Yankie and his squad entered a woods and numerous explosions from booby traps and mines wounded several of his men causing much confusion. Although wounded himself, Sergeant Yankie reorganized he remaining men and those of another squad. Then, despite his painful wound and enemy fire, he skillfully directed the men in seizing his squad’s original objective and also captured the other squad’s objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Yankie, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
