Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Carl V. Ivey (ASN: 34087014), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 February 1945, in Germany. Observing an enemy tank, Sergeant Ivey and a comrade under the fire of deadly small arms moved to a position where they could deliver effective fire on it. They fired two phosphorous grenades which set the tank on fire forcing it to withdraw. As the tank was withdrawing, they finished knocking it out with a fragmentation grenade. Sergeant Ivey and his comrade, along with other friendly troops who had moved up, fired on the fleeing crew members, forcing them to surrender. Sergeant Ivey’s gallant action in braving the enemy fire aided his comrades in taking their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Ivey, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
