Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] John W. Jones (ASN: 35736738), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. When a man was wounded by intense enemy machine gun and sniper fire and was stumbling around in a dazed condition, Staff Sergeant Jones went through the grazing machine gun fire to reach the man’s side. Though the fire continued to fall around him, Staff Sergeant Jones guided the wounded man to the safety of a ditch where he was given first aid and evacuated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Jones, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
