Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Stanley Hoffman (ASN: 32961923), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. When his platoon was subjected to intense enemy machine gun fire, Staff Sergeant Hoffman moved forward through the enemy fire and encouraged others to follow him. After going to the side of a house sheltering the enemy in an attempt to determine the location and strength of the enemy forces, he sought a bazooka man to force the enemy out of their position. Staff Sergeant Hoffman then went to a shell hole which was vulnerable to sniper fire where he covered the rear of the house and directed fire of an anti-tank gun on the escaping enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hoffman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
