Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] John D’Amico (ASN: 0-1315278), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. When the advance of his company was bitterly contested by the enemy, Captain D’Amico urged his men onward and took a position at the head of the company. On several occasions he was the first to enter sniper-infested buildings. Following his gallant example, his men broke through the enemy resistance, killing twenty-five of the enemy and capturing thirty-five. Captain D’Amico’s great heroism gave his men the needed stimulation to overcome all resistance in taking their objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain D’Amico, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
