The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star to Sergeant Carl T. Horn, United States Army, for meritorious achievement in action during ground operations against a hostile force while serving with Troop E, 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Oberspier, Germany, on 11 April 1945. As Sergeant Horn’s troop was proceeding in column, it was subjected to intense enemy artillery and panzerfaust fire. Although his tank was in the direct line of fire and had been hit by the initial burst, Sergeant Horn remained at his gun. Firing with superior accuracy, he succeeded in destroying two machine guns and an enemy armored vehicle before the blasts form his guns ignited leaking gasoline from his tank and he was forced to abandon it. When the flames subsided, Sergeant Horn ran through a hail of direct sniper fire and salvaged the guns and ammunition from the scorched vehicle. Then, setting these guns up in a defensive position, he succeeded in pinning down the enemy and enabled the forward elements of his troop to withdraw and reorganized for a subsequent successful attack. The intrepid daring and valor displayed by Sergeant Horn reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
