The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Russell N. Schneider (ASN: 326761208), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against the enemy at Marimont Woods, France, on 19 November 1944. During offensive operations in Marimont Woods, Company K was subjected to heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire and suffered casualties. Although he was himself painfully wounded in the left arm by shrapnel, Technician Fifth Grade Schneider, an aid man attacked to Company K, moved among the wounded and administered effective first aid to them. After two hours of steady work he was unable to make use of his left arm, but, securing the assistance of a comrade, continued his first aid ministrations for an addition one and one half hours, exposed during this entire time to intermittent enemy shell fire. Only after his medical supplies were exhausted did Technician Fifth Grade Schneider consent to his own evacuation for medical treatment. His unusual courage under fire, strong initiative, and commendable solicitude for our wounded reflect he highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
