The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Joseph Zarcone, Jr. (ASN: US-53579007), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Zarcone distinguished himself while serving as a Military Policeman with the 4th Military Police Company, 4th Infantry Division. On 22 December 1967, Private First Class Zarcone, with a comrade, helped to combat a fire at the 1st Brigade base camp. Upon determining that the fire was threatening an ammunition dump, with complete disregard for his own safety, he began removing explosives from the path of the blazing fire. He then rushed to a road adjacent o the danger zone and began halting vehicles and directing their operators and passengers to protective shelters, for firing shrapnel was a constant threat to all in the immediate area. As a result of his quick actions, many persons were undoubtedly saved from death or serious injury. Private First Class Zarcone’s personal bravery, initiative, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
