    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Richard A. Pierce (ASN: 16823858), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in operations against an armed hostile force, while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 8 January 1967. Specialist Fourth Class Pierce was killed while rescuing his comrades from an open rice paddy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Specialist Fourth Class Pierce, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
