The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant David Soucie, Canadian Army, for gallantry in action while attached to elements of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, United States Army, in November 1969, in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Soucie was commanding two platoons of Mobile Strike Force soldiers on a search and clear mission in Chau Doc Province, Southy Vietnam. The units came under heavy rocket fire, destroying radio equipment and wounding Sergeant Soucie. His troops had become confused and disorganized but Sergeant Soucie emboldened his comrades by crawling forward and throwing grenades at the hostile bunkers, killing six of the enemy. When ordered to the rear, Sergeant Soucie helped drag wounded and dead soldiers out of the area while continuing to fire at the Viet Cong, killing at least one. Refusing to be evacuated, he helped direct air strikes into the enemy area and then led an attempted counter attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Soucie, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
