The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Russell T. Ober, III, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Ober distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving in an F-105 Fighter airplane of the 561st “Wild Weasel” Squadron, 23d Tactical Fighter Wing, TWELFTH Air Force, in action against the enemy on 21 November 1970. Captain Ober was a member of the fighter aircraft cover for the Prisoner of War search and rescue operation at Son Tay, North Vietnam. In complete disregard for his personal safety, he flew deep into enemy territory against enemy surface-to-air missile installations. He repeated exposed himself to the enemy in an attempt to draw attention and fire from the slower, mor vulnerable rescue aircraft. Consequently, he was forced to take action to evade the surface-to-air missiles. Despite the danger to his safety, he continued to engage high threat surface-to-air missile sites until the sites were silenced. As a result of his heroic efforts, the enemy missile crews were unable to engage the rescue forcer. This courageous and aggressive action enabled the rescue forces to complete this mission and successfully withdraw from the objective area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Ober, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
