    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Thomas C. Wilson (ASN: RA-15706280), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with. Specialist Fourth Class Wilson distinguished himself on 11 January 1966, while serving as a member of a chemical team of the 51st Chemical Detachment (CBRC) (Airborne), 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate), in action against the enemy in the Ho Bo Woods, Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Specialist Fourth Class Wilson’s team was assisting an Australian unit in accomplishing the assigned mission. The tunnel system had been flushed with a chemical and an Australian sergeant, who was search the tunnel, had collapsed from lack of oxygen. Numerous members of the team had attempted to extract the soldier, who was wedged inside the tunnel, but also had become casualties. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Fourth Class Wilson voluntarily entered the tunnel numerous times over a four hour period in an attempt to extract he collapsed sergeant. Specialist Fourth Class Wilson, without hesitation, placed the life of his fellow man above his own as he succeeded in saving the Australian sergeant. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
