The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Daniel T. Lorbiecke, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the afternoon of 22 June 1969, the Second Platoon of Company H was conducting a search and destroy mission near Fire Support Base RUSSELL in Quang Tri Province, when the point element came under a heavy volume of hand grenade, small arms, and automatic weapons fire from a large and well-fortified North Vietnamese Army unit. While attempting to envelop the enemy emplacement, Lance Corporal Lorbiecke’s fire team became the target of a concentrated barrage of automatic weapons fire. Reacting instantly, he directed his companions to assault the hostile positions and, fearlessly maneuvering throughout the fire-swept terrain, skillfully coordinated their efforts. Although seriously wounded in the right shoulder and arm by hostile fire, he resolutely carried the wounded man back to a relatively safe position and, establishing an effective base of fire, enabled his team to withdraw. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the repulsion of the enemy unit. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Lorbiecke was instrumental in saving the life of one Marine and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
