The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Cadet First Class John Hartman Carroll, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Fort Wayne, Indiana, on 27 July 1989. On that date, Cadet Carroll stopped to assist at the scene of an automobile accident. One of the vehicles involved suddenly burst into flames while the driver remained in the vehicle incapacitated. Without regard for his own safety, Cadet Carroll entered the burning vehicle and pulled the victim safely from the wreckage. He then administered critical first aid which undoubtedly saved the victim’s life. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Cadet Carroll has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
