The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain John Victor Bode, II, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at the 128th Air Refueling Group, General Mitchell Air National Guard Base, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 10 December 1993. On that date, at 0702 hours, aircraft 1470 exploded. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Bode immediately ran from flight operations to the flight line. Captain Bode, despite the hazard of exploding fuel tanks, oxygen bottles, and falling debris, ran to aircraft 309 on flightline spot number four, only 100 feet from the burning and exploding aircraft, removed engine covers and checked the intakes in preparation of the aircraft taxiing to a safer location on the flightline. Captain Bode’s heroic actions and efficient handling of a dangerous situation saved a valuable aircraft and the possible additional loss of life. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Bode reflect great credit upon himself, the Air National Guard, and the United States Air Force.
