The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain Paul Gregory Smith, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Twin Falls, Idaho, on 16 March 1987. On that date, Captain Smith rushed to the area where a semitrailer had crashed. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite the hazards of flames and exploding fuel tanks, Captain Smith unhesitatingly crawled up on the burning truck and successfully removed one victim to safety. Captain Smith then returned to the burning vehicle but his rescue efforts of a second victim were thwarted by the spread and intensity of the flames. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Captain Smith as reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
