The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Major Robert Woodrow Hudson, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Tirennia, Italy, on 16 May 1989. On that date, Major Hudson came upon a head-on collision between two local Italian vehicles. One vehicle was in a ditch with the driver pinned in the car and the other was five feet away engulfed in flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Major Hudson, despite the hazard of an exploding gas tank five feet away, stayed with the pinned driver, who was in shock and in hysterics. He calmed the victim and kept him from inflicting more damage to himself until a medical team arrived on the scene. Had the gas tank exploded, not only would Major Hudson have been fatally wounded, but also the driver of the car and two United States military members who assisted in the emergency actions. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Major Hudson reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
